Reading Instruction:
Reading can be simplified in 5 parts: Phonemic Awareness: This is the oral manipulation of sounds, syllables, rhymes, words, and sentences. The target window for this skill is the end of second grade. Phonics: This is a sound/symbol relationship of letters and combinations of letters to create specific sounds. Fluency: This skill is extremely important in 5th grade as students need to be able to read with proper expression and phrasing through understanding the structure of a sentence in relation to the sentences surrounding it. Students that do well at fluency typically understand what they are reading much better. Vocabulary: There are two important parts to vocabulary. One of them is actually being able to understand the word that has been decoded or "sounded out". The second is to know the meaning of what has been said/read. Both of these are vital to understanding. Comprehension: This is the ability to understand the text (book, poem, passage, story) that has been read. This is where student are expected to make connections, inferences, predictions, and analyze what they have read. Our Reading Plan: Reading Instruction in Mr. Barron's classroom is conducted through an Integrated Reading Workshop Model. This simply means that students will build on the foundations of reading through others subjects such as science and social studies while using sound reading strategies to build fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. In the upper grades (4 and above) students are reading to learn instead of learning to read. |
Previous SkillWe have just started the school year. The main importance for students at this moment is to be reading daily for a minimum of 30 minutes. This is important for being successful.
|
Current SkillThe Currents skill we are working on is THEME. This skill requires students to be able to determine what message the author/writer is trying to communicate to the reader. This can also be known as the moral of the story. Students will be required to explain how the character's reactions support the theme they come up with.
